How Entrepreneurs Can Use AI to Better Understand Their Target Customers

Successful entrepreneurship has always been about understanding customers' needs, desires, and pain points. Traditionally, this process was time-consuming and resource-heavy, but artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way entrepreneurs can gain these insights. By harnessing AI tools, entrepreneurs can now analyze vast amounts of data, extract meaningful insights, and make informed, data-driven decisions with greater efficiency.
As an entrepreneurship professor at Babson College leading courses on AI and innovation, I witness firsthand how AI is transforming the entrepreneurial landscape. While some may argue that AI is overhyped, my experience shows that it’s a powerful tool for entrepreneurs seeking to explore and seize new business opportunities.
AI’s Superpowers in Scaling Insights
One of the key benefits of AI is its ability to synthesize large data sets quickly, offering a deeper understanding of customer behavior and preferences. For example, tools like Otter.ai can transcribe focus groups and customer interviews in seconds, helping entrepreneurs identify unmet needs and pain points more efficiently. AI-powered sentiment analysis tools, such as those from Microsoft Azure, can detect emotional tones in customer conversations that humans might overlook, providing a nuanced understanding of how customers feel about a product or brand.
Moreover, AI can aggregate customer feedback from social media, product reviews, and support tickets using platforms like MeaningCloud. Entrepreneurs can set up automated workflows via platforms like Zapier to streamline the collection and analysis of this data, enabling them to quickly identify recurring issues and opportunities for innovation.
Customizing the Customer Experience with AI
AI also empowers entrepreneurs to tailor customer experiences more effectively. For instance, one of my students, Chloe Samaha, founded BOND, a virtual water cooler app designed to foster engagement among remote teams. BOND uses ChatGPT to generate personalized, culture-specific questions that boost employee interaction and satisfaction. By analyzing engagement data, the AI model is continuously refined to enhance the user experience—something that would be impossible at scale without AI.
The Boundless Future of AI in Entrepreneurship
AI’s applications in entrepreneurship extend beyond customer insights. With advancements in text-to-code capabilities, tools like ChatGPT are making it easier for non-technical entrepreneurs to prototype software by simply describing their ideas. Meanwhile, experienced coders can now work five to ten times faster, accelerating the innovation process.
As AI evolves, its potential to reshape entrepreneurship will only grow, enabling entrepreneurs to innovate, adapt, and thrive by gaining a deeper understanding of their customers.
